Architects: SAMOO
Location: Jeju, Korea
Area: 34,042 sqm
Floors: 1 story and 2 basements
Year: 2013
Follow the architects: Within the rectangular site, which faces Mt. Halla to the west and Seongsan Ilchulbong(Peak) to the east, the design team defined an axis that connects the symbols of the island. Along the axis is a stone wall, the intermediate transition zone that leads visitors through diverse landscapes and the new world of myth. It is also a starting point of an exhibition center featuring an elegant and gracious curve, which symbolizes the Goddess of Jeju. As the new symbol of Jeju, the stone wall reinterprets the traditional wall to a mythical level. Jeju’s nature and history are symbolized by the straw thatch, which is a traditional roof technique of the island, and the local material representing the characteristics and stone culture of Jeju, which unify nature, culture and landscape. Carrying eight themes, the visitors will be able to explore the exhibition hall and experience the myth and history of Jeju.
