Ivi Diamantopoulou and Jaffer Kolb of New Affiliates were named recipients of this year’s Architectural League of New York's League Prize. Each year...
From the architect: Each year, The Architectural League announces six firms as winners of the award, which spotlights young, innovative North American architects and designers. In 2020, a jury of architects and design professionals selected the winners in a portfolio competition around the theme “Value,” defined as a slippery construct in architecture, leading to thoughts of numbers, colors, measurement, worth, and ethics. Value can be personal or shared, analytical or sensorial.
Relating this year’s theme, Value, New Affiliates placed emphasis on the pressing and inventive possibilities of reuse across scales in architecture from installations to pavilions; ground-ups to renovations. The partners describe how they “scavenge for parts to reconstruct fragments, surfaces, and forms out of byproducts; to find hidden moments of value and invent new visual languages and disciplinary tools along the way.”
In addition to New Affiliates, this year's other League Prize award winners are David Eskenazi of d.esk, Garrett Ricciardi and Julian Rose of Formlessfinder, Leslie Lok and Sasa Zivkovic of HANNAH, Issac Michan Daniel of Michan Architecture, and Luis Beltrán del Río García and Andrew Sosa Martínez of Vrtical.
Given the constraints of social engagement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s League Prize program will be presented entirely online beginning in June 2020. Winners will deliver streamed lectures followed by a live q&a session and will create digital installations of their work. Ivi Diamantopoulou and Jaffer Kolb of New Affiliates will give an online lecture on June 22, 2020 alongside Issac Michan Daniel of Michan Architecture.
The League Prize is organized under the direction of program director Anne Rieselbach, program manager Catarina Flaksman, and the Young Architects + Designers Committee. New Affiliates is an award winning New York-based design practice led by Ivi Diamantopoulou and Jaffer Kolb. The studio learns through building, experimenting with forms and materials to blur the lines between volume, structure, decoration and surface. Alongside commissioned work, they look to initiate projects and collaborations that focus on matters of reuse within a context of material excess, particularly as it relates to current standards of practice.
The studio has completed a range of work from interiors to ground-up projects alongside a series of collaborations with institutions including New York's Jewish Museum, the Shed, and the Canadian Center for Architecture. They have exhibited in venues from Storefront for Art and Architecture to the Venice Architecture Biennale and the Onassis Cultural Center, and have been published in numerous design magazines internationally. The Architectural League of New York nurtures excellence in architecture, design, and urbanism, and stimulates thinking and action on the critical design and building issues of our time. As a vital, independent forum for architecture and its allied disciplines, the League helps create a more beautiful, vibrant, innovative, and sustainable future.
