Box on the Rock is a luxury villa in the hills above the Sonoma Valley that was designed by Schwartz and Architect. The villa has the two private wings wrap around to create a protected open-air courtyard at the center of the form. This courtyard links the entry to the living space and the cantilevered deck and views beyond.

From the architects: We begin with the most basic diagram of a typical single family home. But here, given the steep site and desire to hide the parking, we develop a rear approach that splits the diagram of the house in two.
The two wings reconnect around an entry courtyard while still intensifying the split through the house that frames the site's spectacular views. The geometry of the plan morphs subtly in response to both the "push" of internal functional needs and the "pull" of these long views. Each geometric shift is precisely calibrated to the path of the sun and shade throughout the year.
